You don’t have to be a foodie to stay at Northcote, but the chances are it will be your tastebuds which draw you to this slightly off the beaten track country hotel. Chef-patron Nigel Haworth did, after all, put Lancashire on the map as a dining destination 20 years ago, and the place, which perches unassumingly on the corner of the main road to Preston, is now drawing celebrated guest chefs and those who like to follow them from all over the world.

“Cold towel sir?”  Is the perfect way to introduce a good feeling as far as I am concerned as I check in to the Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel on a hot Knightsbridge day. My good feel factor is lifted all the more as a coffee materialises next to my couch to keep me company as i wait a couple of minutes for the room to be ready.

There are many advantages to be had for a hotel based in Knightsbridge and the Jumeirah Carlton Tower makes the most of all of them. Harvey Nichols and Harrods practically on the doorstep, the designer shops on Sloane Street a mere stone’s throw away and those lovely leafy lanes away from the main drag to wander down. But the 18 floors of the Jumeirah Carlton Tower offer something else too; one of the most spectacular views you can get across London.

PORTOBELLO HOTEL. London

Not that you’d ever guess, from the looks of this utterly genteel hostelry a stone’s throw from Portobello market.   It’s every bit the gracious Victorian house, the very antithesis of a rock’n’roll hangout.   Only a small brass plaque distinguishes it from its white stucco neighbours in this quiet enclave off Ladbroke Grove an eight-minute stroll from Notting Hill Gate.

Eduardo is a bit quick off the mark at the Langham Club private check in. As soon as I cross the threshold of the third floor foyer there’s a cool drink in my hand, a towel at my side and a beaming smile in front of me.

The Glasshouse Hotel. An amazing Edinburgh Tardis.

20/07/2015 by .
The Glasshouse hotel

The Glasshouse Hotel  is something of a Tardis: walking past the beautiful old church near Edinburgh’s iconic Calton Hill, you’d have no idea that the facade leads into a modern 77 room hotel, beautifully designed to both compliment the traditional exterior and to make the most of its scenic setting.
