20/05/2017 .One ‘word’ admirably sums up the Grant Arms Hotel in Grantown-on-Spey – WYSIWYG: What you see is what you get. There are no pretensions here − even though Queen Victoria and Prince Albert once stayed − just the welcoming and quiet efficiency of a mainstream 50-room, 3-star Gold hotel and restaurant.

20/05/2017 .It ought to be axiomatic that there are times when, given the pace of modern living, we just have to step off the travellator of life, and take a break. Let the rest of the world muddle on, while we ‘Take Five’, or whatever it needs to revive a flagging spirit.

05/05/2017 .The first hotel where I saw a photograph of Audrey Hepburn posing in Givenchy was a posh Paris five-star favoured by fashionistas. That the second time I saw one was in the fourth-floor lift lobby of the Hampton by Hilton Luton Airport is nothing short of remarkable.

27/04/2017 .I awake to a gentle dawn chorus of willow warblers in the surrounding lichen-clad silver birch; a delightful prod into another day, backed by silence rather than urban cacophony. 25/04/2017 .London Paddington was in one of its quieter moods as I took my seat aboard the GWR service to Newton Abbot. A brief but pleasant interlude in the GWR First Class lounge was followed by a remarkably quick journey just three stops later to the peace and tranquillity of south Devon in just under two and a half hours.

01/03/2017 .Arrival at The Petwood Hotel was greeted by disconcerting ambiguity. A surfeit of RAF personnel and people dressed in outmoded fashions had me wondering if I had passed through a time warp back to a parallel universe set in 1940s.

28/02/2017 .Lincolnshire is not short of stately homes, country houses and castles, notably the Elizabethan mansion of Doddington Hall, and the ghostly haunt of the Pilgrim Fathers, Gainsborough Old Hall.

25/01/2017 .Portsmouth has been much maligned, Spike Milligan relegated the whole town to Room 101 and sure, a weekend break in Portsmouth doesn’t have the same ring as 48 hours in Corfu or Majorca. You won’t see minke whales, otters or seals frolicking on the coast like you could, up in Scotland. But Portsmouth has a rich literary and naval history, the first Sherlock Holmes was written here. There is a newly restored and amazing dockyard with Henry VIII’s warship the Mary Rose and Nelson’s Victory.
