Step into Cotswolds88 hotel, set in the beautiful village of Painswick and you’d be excused for thinking you’d just stepped off the London Overground into East London’s hippest new joint. From outside the hotel, the design is very much in keeping with the local area, complete with traditional cream Cotswold stone.

There is one thing I know for sure. It is a lot more civilized to catch a very early flight when you’ve just spent the night at an airport hotel. It’s even more civilized when said hotel is connected to the terminal and you can casually stroll across to the check in.

Blakes Hotel

Blakes exists in a glorious 70s timewarp which seems delightfully exotic and eccentric rather than dated in an era of austerity. It may no longer be in the ownership of designer Anouska Hempel, who created the South Kensington bolthole as London’s first luxury boutique hotel in 1978, but she still oversees the design, and has kept it theatrical, Oriental and thoroughly over the top.

The Headland Hotel and Cottages, Fistral Beach, Newquay.

The Headland Hotel, overlooking Newquay’s Fistral Beach, is a surprise on many levels.   The heart sinks slightly driving up to the impressive but distinctly Victorian pile, much like those which sit atop cliffs all round the British coast.  But inside, while resolutely Gothic in character, recalling the great age of the railway, the hotel is anything but faded.

So here you are, riding in a horse and carriage, following the exact route of Kate and William’s royal wedding with your own princess by your side. The only things missing are the crowds and the mounted guards of honour, but you can’t have everything can you.
