The door opened wide onto a large hallway bathed in the afternoon Cornish light. But, all I could see was two beaming faces “We’ve been expecting you, coffee?” says Vanessa Clark as husband Simon directed us to a large welcoming lounge with an open fireplace, a 19th century apothecary’s cabinet to die for and spellbinding wallpaper denoting a designer eye for unusual and eclectic décor. We had arrived at Highcliffe Contemporary B&B.

The first hotel where I saw a photograph of Audrey Hepburn posing in Givenchy was a posh Paris five-star favoured by fashionistas.  That the second time I saw one was in the fourth-floor lift lobby of the Hampton by Hilton Luton Airport is nothing short of remarkable.

London Paddington was in one of its quieter moods as I took my seat aboard the GWR service to Newton Abbot. A brief but pleasant interlude in the GWR First Class lounge was followed by a remarkably quick journey just three stops later to the peace and tranquillity of south Devon in just under two and a half hours.

Arrival at The Petwood Hotel was greeted by disconcerting ambiguity. A surfeit of RAF personnel and people dressed in outmoded fashions had me wondering if I had passed through a time warp back to a parallel universe set in 1940s.
