I remember it well. Around 18 months ago, when I first visited City of Dreams Mediterranean, I had a casual chat with the Sales Director who happened to mention in passing there was a new golf club development being built right next door. “Golf in Limassol, that’s as first” I said, “I’d love to check it out when it opens”.

Fast-forward and I’m back at City of Dreams Mediterranean and looking forward to a proper championship challenge at Limassol Greens. For golfers and Limassol, this is a dream come true, because up to now, the nearest golf course is Aphrodite Hills in Paphos, around 45 minutes’ drive away.

To celebrate the opening, City of Dreams Mediterranean has partnered with Limassol Greens to offer a luxury golf package that includes free round trip transfers to the clubhouse.

Perhaps a links masterpiece.

Cabell Robinson is the same architect who designed Aphrodite Hills, although Limassol Greens is a very different prospect. This is a wetland and salt lake landscape, vastly different from Aphrodite’s craggy mountainous terrain. It’s more akin to a links experience, and that quite frankly is a badge of honour for golf courses, because no one can criticise Scottish links, the very home of golf.

In true links style there are undulating fairways, hidden valleys and some very tricky lake holes cunningly hidden by dense reeds. With no shelter from the sea breeze, any hole facing the wind will be a tussle, but then again, you’ll also get wind assistance coming back the other way.

This I discovered when I nearly drove the green on the 7th and also managed an easy par on 13th, stroke index 1! Mind you the closing three holes were all into the wind and I had to use a driver for practically every shot. Well, not every shot, but you get the picture.

At 6,330 metres (nearly 7,000 yards) off the back tees it’s a tough challenge for low handicappers, but off the forward tees less skilled players will find it a very rewarding experience.

The Limassol Greens estate is vast, once a private citrus farm dating back to the 1930s and there are impressive development plans in progress for not just golf, but residential and leisure facilities too.

As I arrived, the shiny new clubhouse’s lofty terrace was an inviting place to get a real perspective of the resort. Plenty of GPS integrated buggies (Cyprus is famous for its 300 days of sunshine every year so walking could be challenging) while the practice facilities are technically state-of-the-art, with a TrackMan powered driving range, chipping and pitching area and a putting green.

Back on the terrace after my round, sipping a cold one and reflecting on plenty of missed opportunities, I was nevertheless very impressed with the course considering this was still very early days. Perhaps the fairway grass was a little too short making the lies a bit tight, but the greens and bunkers were immaculate.

“You know you can hit a ball right into the UK from here” said Revekka from Limassol Greens sales office, “the 7th tee borders the local British Army base!”  it’s an appealing notion but not one I was prepared to try out.

Overall Limassol Greens is an exceptional track making full use of the beautiful wetland and eucalyptus forest landscape. I have no doubt after it settles itself in, it will be on every Cyprus golfing trip itinerary.

Unwinding in Opulence

Back at the City of Dreams Mediterranean after my round, I had the chance to catch up on the resort since I was last here. Seeing it bathed in summer glory gave it a very different hue. This time around the family pools and loungers were doing great business, as was the Marcos Baghdatis Tennis Academy, adventure park and cavernous supervised kids zone just off the lobby area.

One of the resort’s highlights for me was the sheer number of culinary choices available and second time around was still a thrill. The cavernous Aura buffet for breakfast and dinner still had a jaw-dropping number of food stations, while the premium restaurants Amber Dragon (Asian) Anais (classy French plus late-night DJ sets) and Prime Steakhouse (classic New York steakhouse and cigar lounge) were every bit as good as my last visit. Particularly as I could dine out on the terraces in the balmy evenings.

The 24-hour room service menu didn’t disappoint either, as two of my mornings included a very early start, so sumptuous breakfasts on my own room terrace was a very welcome indulgence.

Limassol is reborn

There’s no doubt in my mind that City of Dreams Mediterranean has transformed Limassol. Not only is it a huge local employer, but it has also brought a lot more visitor traffic to the city, enabling the development of the fancy new marina and old town renovation. Limassol Greens Golf Club is another opportunity to build on this success, and once all the development phases have been completed Limassol will offer two world-class tourist destinations. The future is looking very bright indeed.

City of Dreams Mediterranean

Aphrodite Hills Golf Club

The early days of golf in Cyprus was largely down to the military presence on the island, until 1988 when the first public course was opened. But when Aphrodite Hills Resort was created in Paphos in 2002 it was on another level entirely. Built across numerous yawning gorges and crevasses with some hair-raising zig zagging cart paths it was a real test of strategic golfing play.

Not to mention a bottomless pit of lost balls! The signature 7 th hole is a par 3 across a mighty crevasse to a green perched right at the edge of the canyon. A total carry of 210 metres off the back tees or 127 metres off the yellows. Yet incredibly a stroke index of only 18, supposedly the easiest hole on the course!  A buggy is essential, not just because of the almost vertical ups and downs, but because the distance between the 2nd and 3rd holes is over 1 km.
