The door opened wide onto a large hallway bathed in the afternoon Cornish light. But, all I could see was two beaming faces “We’ve been expecting you, coffee?” says Vanessa Clark as husband Simon directed us to a large welcoming lounge with an open fireplace, a 19th century apothecary’s cabinet to die for and spellbinding wallpaper denoting a designer eye for unusual and eclectic décor. A brief but pleasant interlude in the GWR First Class lounge was followed by a remarkably quick journey just three stops later to the peace and tranquillity of south Devon in just under two and a half hours.

The white, sprawled out, Moorland Garden Hotel is situated 20 minutes out of Plymouth in the beautiful Dartmoor National Park. As I drove up the long drive the surrounds were really impressive. After all it had been the byword in glamour when it first opened in the 1930’s, with visitors’ ranging from President Truman to David Niven.

Taking the dog to Cornwall in the summer hols can be a tricky proposition. Many hotels and cottages don’t accept canines, and several beaches ban man’s best friend from the sands from June to September.
The Valley is a good bet for both its location and the management’s superior intelligence.

That clever Peter de Savary brought us Bovey Castle in Devon, and now his wife Lana has scored a coup in the county of cream, cider and sailing villages – The Cary Arms Hotel in Babbacombe Beach. She identified a rundown pub with the most beautiful location in Britain and decided to endow it with five-star rooms and a spa, while keeping the pub pubby and the food service nice and casual.

The Headland Hotel, overlooking Newquay’s Fistral Beach, is a surprise on many levels. The heart sinks slightly driving up to the impressive but distinctly Victorian pile, much like those which sit atop cliffs all round the British coast. But inside, while resolutely Gothic in character, recalling the great age of the railway, the hotel is anything but faded.
