Considering Hotel Bankov was 142 years old and the oldest hotel in Slovakia by a mile, the flat screen TV and free high speed wi-fi in my room were both something of a revelation. So too come to think of it, were the crisp cotton sheets, the contemporary room furnishings and delicious interior design.

22/07/2014 .Villa Dubrovnik
11/07/2014 .Croatia’s stellar Dalmatian coast has long been seen as an alternative contender to Italy’s Amalfi and as my taxi makes a tight cliff top hairpin turn onto an even tighter road clearly never intended for motor car use, the difference is obvious to me. No traffic. Just peace, solitude and birdsong; the timeless backdrop of old town Dubrovnik lying far below, just across the bay. This quiet narrow lane, the only way in to Villa Dubrovnik by road, is an ideal introduction to a world class retreat so perfect, it almost beggars belief.

08/07/2014 .Taking the dog to Cornwall in the summer hols can be a tricky proposition. Many hotels and cottages don’t accept canines, and several beaches ban man’s best friend from the sands from June to September.
The Valley is a good bet for both its location and the management’s superior intelligence.
THE FRENCH HORN. SONNING-ON-THAMES
01/07/2014 .There are hotels and restaurants which continually fall over themselves to update their rooms and menus – and many others whose loyal clientèle tells them: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Judging by the packed dining room on a rainy midweek afternoon out of season, The French Horn has wisely decided to adopt the latter course. You could be tempted to think almost nothing had changed in the 40 years since the Leventhal family took over this lovely old Thameside inn at Sonning.

18/06/2014 .Mount Lycabettus which is where you’ll find Saint George Lycabettus Hotel has quite a lot going for it. For one thing, it’s the highest point in Athens so you can imagine what the views are like, and it’s mythical past is not to be sneered at either having been the property of Athena at one time, the goddess from whence the city takes its name.

01/06/2014 .Half Moon Street is like many others of its kind in London’s Mayfair; a row of fabulous Georgian town houses lining both sides of it. However, take a stroll through the front entrance of Flemings Mayfair Hotel and you’ll experience something quite different. Something unlike any of its neighbours. Almost as if you’ve suddenly warped into a different dimension.

29/05/2014 .I love a bit of history, and walking up to the front entrance of the St.James’s Hotel and Club (which ironically began as a Travellers Club for diplomats back in 1857), I reminded myself of all the previous owners and former members of this fine piece of luxury Georgian real estate in the heart of London’s Mayfair. Ian Fleming, Winston Churchill and in 1980 Peter De Savary and his show biz investors: Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Tim Rice, Dudley Moore, Liza Minelli and Pete Townsend. Heady days.

02/05/2014 .It seems the good Saint Ermin of Lobbes was a man of wisdom and sanctity and a bit of a dab hand at a prophecy or two. Rather fitting then that I happened to be visiting St. Ermin’s Hotel on his Saint Day (25th April for future reference) and even more apt, it was at one time the preferred meeting place for top British secret service types including SIS and MI5, who, through their own acts of wisdom could predict more than a thing or two themselves.

21/04/2014 .London’s Marble Arch area is a tale of two sides. On one side is bustling busy Oxford Street at the top of Park Lane; street hawkers, tourists and traffic. On the other, by Great Cumberland Place, a leafy mews laden warren of 18th century Georgian townhouses and elegance from a bygone era. It is in this stylish corner of leafy London you’ll find The Arch Hotel, taking up no less than seven of these lovely Grade II listed houses and keeping them in the style they are accustomed to in the process.
