Critically acclaimed new period drama, The White Queen has caused quite a stir for hoteliers in Belgium, where it was filmed. Belgium hotel bookings specialist, LateRooms.com reports there’s been a huge 66% increase week on week in hotel bookings into Ghent since the drama aired its second installment on BBC1 last Sunday.
Similarly in Bruges, also a filming location for The White Queen, hotel bookings have risen by 16%. Belgium, provides the authentic medieval backdrop to Philippa Gregory’s War of the Roses story in which Elizabeth Woodville is plucked from obscurity to marry the man who became England’s first Yorkist king, Edward IV.
“It is fantastic to see hotels in Ghent and Bruges receiving such an increase in bookings from the success of The White Queen”, commented Lynda Matthews, Head of Marketing for LateRooms.com. “The drama really puts Belgium in the spotlight, particularly Ghent, which might not always be people’s first choice when visiting the country.”
