Rovinj old town Monte Restaurant wins Michelin star.
The latest 2017 Michelin guide has awarded Croatian Monte Restaurant in the old town of Rovinj a Michelin star. This is the first time a Croatian restaurant has won the coveted Michelin award.
Located on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula and famous for it’s beautiful waterfront, pine fringed, stunning coves and pastel coloured houses, Rovinj is a favourite tourist hideaway for those in the know.
Istria’s outstanding wines and olive oil is legendary winning international awards in recent years: famous Decanter International has awarded Istrian winemakers medals and Flos Olei, acknowledged as the most comprehensive guide to the world’s best extra virgin olive oils, named Istria as the world’s best olive oil region in 2016 and 2017.
Michelin awarded 33 restaurants in Croatia a special recommendation in the 2017 listings with 12 of these being in Istria, in addition to the acclaimed winner, Monte.
The 12 restaurants were in Novigrad, Brtonigla, Banjole, Porec, Livade, Bale, Zambratija and Rovinj.
Istria has been a top destination for gourmets for many years with visitors from neighbouring countries including Italy and Austria making the short drive to spend a weekend tasting the region’s outstanding food, wines and oils.
Truffles, hand crafted cheese, famous air dried prsut (ham), fresh Adriatic fish and seafood are the main draws in addition to the superb wines and olive oils.
How to get to Rovinj
This year, there are 26 flights weekly from the UK to Pula, Istria’s own international airport, some start in March and the short flight from London takes just two hours. From Eire there are three flights weekly from Dublin with a flight time of under three hours.
