Lucy Daltroff gets to practise her golf swing at the Trackmen driving range, during her visit to the Belton Woods Hotel in Lincolnshire.
There is a good first impression when approaching the Belton Woods Hotel in Lincolnshire; a grand entrance, flanked by ancient trees and surrounded by the hills of Grantham, gives a sense that it is a place where time slows down. Then, when checking in, a big window next to the desk, overlooks a large and well-designed swimming pool and immediately that feeling is compounded …..with the wish to try it out!!
The 136 bedroom 4 star hotel, part of the QHotels Collection, is situated in a sprawling estate, encompassing over 475 acres, where golf enthusiasts are well catered for with not one, but two, championship courses, winding through the countryside. “The Lakes” puts skills to the test with its water hazards and bunkers, while “The Woods” gives a chance to prepare a golf swing in narrow tree-lined fairways with undulating greens.
So it is not surprising to hear that Belton Wood has hosted numerous PGA tournaments over the years, and is one of the top golf resorts in the East Midlands. Afterwards, “The Claret Jug” clubhouse offers players a drink and a chance to relax with its large Sky Sports tv.
If, like me, your game needs rather a lot of work, there is a practice green, and Trackman Driving Range with floodlights. Here the pro, Matt, improved my stance and confidence, while the machine registered the length of shots and helped to record details, when later I played a simulated “game” with my husband and son. Great fun although I think for the moment, I may be sticking to the day job!
Those, who prefer an even slower pace, can plump for the comprehensive spa, where facials, massage, nail treatments eyebrow tints, and waxing are on offer, as well as Elemis’ signature deep-cleansing skin wellness facials. It was also good to see that the hotel also works with the Amethyst Trust to offer specialist massages and facials to those affected by cancer.
I couldn’t decide whether to have the deliciously sounding “Frangipani Scrub” but instead opted for the “Elemis Rebalancing, Ritual” administered by Sarah, who felt so experienced and made it into an enjoyable treat with a combination of a personalised facial 5 minute scalp massage and a lower leg and foot massage.
If I had been staying longer at the hotel I might have taken advantage of either the tennis or squash courts, or the fully equipped gym but instead I used the pool, Jacuzzi, Steam room and Sauna.
It’s not just the amenities that make Belton Woods stand out, but also the warm and welcoming atmosphere that permeates the entire hotel. The staff were consistently friendly making us all feel like valued guests throughout the stay. Whether it was offering recommendations for local attractions or simply engaging in conversation, their attentiveness added a personal touch.
The buffet food at breakfast of course offered full English, complete with delicious hash brown or continental alternatives. In the evening the Belton Woods Bar & Grill with its view over the golf course, offers a selection of flavourful grilled dishes. My husband’s starter of Duck Liver Parfait with apple and cinnamon granola was delicious and the main course of Roasted Scottish sea trout with herbed new potatoes, roasted baby gem peas and shallot butter sauce was good too.
White chocolate mini doughnuts served with a choice of tea and coffee was a good value way of ending a meal. Basically, good pub food at slightly premium prices. Other dining options includes afternoon tea and good bar snacks.
The bedrooms go from the classic, while Deluxe Rooms offer a bit more space to stretch out and unwind. Superior Rooms, Feature King Rooms or Suites are perfect for a special occasion . These larger rooms boast plenty of thoughtful little touches from a selection of complimentary drinks to enhanced toiletries, while some rooms have a private patio or balcony for taking in the views.
Belton Woods is ideally located for those looking to explore the surrounding area. The nearby Belton House, a National Trust property, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of English country living. Additionally, the market town of Grantham, with its associations with Margaret Thatcher (her father’s tobacconist and grocery shop is now a “Living Health” establishment but still there).
Her statue honouring arguably the nation’s greatest women, stands in the main square next to the country’s greatest man, Sir Isaac Newton, who was born and brought up in the area.
In summary, Belton Woods Hotel is a perfect retreat for those seeking a mix of relaxation, luxury, and English countryside charm. A place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse in the peaceful beauty of Lincolnshire.
