Kasa and Kin, a new all-day Filipino restaurant, bar and bakery opened this week in Poland Street, Soho.
The restaurant heralds a new culinary chapter from Rowena and Chris, the owners of Romulo Café & Restaurant, a much-loved and multi-award-winning neighbourhood eatery in Kensington.
Kasa and Kin however is an entirely different type of experience. A Filipino-style café and bakery by day, but once evening comes, it changes to a full-on dinner menu with wines and cocktails.
Rowena and Chris may well be the driving force behind Kasa & Kin, but executive chef Jeremy Villanueva together with Michelin-starred chef and consultant Pat McDonald provide the culinary magic that was so revered over at Romulo.
Kasa & Kin’s shiny new interior is dominated by an interactive wall mural by creative talesmith Kulay Labitigan who has designed a colourful tropical rainforest inspired by the 16th-century poem of Ibong Adarna the famous Filipino mythical bird..
The daytime offering ranges from morning picks such as freshly-baked pandesal doughnuts filled with purple yam and coconut, lunchtime salads and sandwiches as well as create-your-own Imbento boxes. In the afternoon the patisserie provides homemade cakes and traditional teas and coffees.
But here’s the genius part. Come evening the lights dim and the Pinoy robata grill is fired up for some flaming Filipino BBQ sticks and a menu of Filipino-style tapas washed down by artisan cocktails, wines, and beers.
It is effectively two different restaurants under one roof, perhaps something a little unique for London’s busy Soho.
