Andy Mossack reviews Skechers GO GOLF Elite 5, probably the most comfortable golf shoe on the market.
We all know how Skechers has transformed the outdoor shoe universe by creating a level of comfort previously unknown to humankind. It’s commitment to investing in sizeable amounts of shoe tech research into comfort performance technology has paid off handsomely. Patented arch fit insoles, memory foam layers and podiatrist approved shaping are the basic ingredients to an end product that feels like you’re walking on air.
I have previously looked at Skechers outdoor trail shoes range, but when it comes to sport and golf in particular, the market is crowded with established marquee golf brands. That said, if Skechers can replicate its comfort tech and combine it with the the durability and performance needs of golfers, then there’s every reason to dream big.
Skechers GO GOLF Elite 5 has all the hallmarks of doing just that.
First off, the range looks the part. There are four colours for a start; black, grey, navy and a sublime white (not recommended for a muddy rainy day, but an absolute stunner for summer). They contain all the standard Skechers comfort technology – the arch fit support, Ortholite comfort foam and removable insole. But on the golf side, the GO GOLF Elite 5 has a waterproof leather upper, guaranteed for 12 months, plus an ingenious spikeless traction outsole, no detachable stiff cleats, just a moulded set of different shaped cleats when, combined with the TPU outsole material, provides plenty of traction.
And that’s the key for me. Golfers need good traction and the peace of mind that we’re not going to slip during a swing. My only concern is not knowing how durable the cleats will be, and therefore how long the grip will last. It’s a premium shoe, and without replaceable cleats could prove to be an expensive omission.
That said, if the soles turn out to be super hard wearing, then there’s no doubt these GO GOLF Elite 5 shoes are the real deal.
I’ve had them for a couple of months now, through wet and dry conditions, and my feet stayed bone dry on the wet days, and very comfortable throughout the round on hot days.
They are extremely comfortable, mirroring that Skechers ‘walking on air’ feel I get with my Skechers walking shoes. Also, I tried machine washing them and they came up a treat.
So for me, the GO GOLF Elite 5 is a hit. Stunningly comfortable, and my white pair turned a few heads in the locker room. That’s more than can be said for my golf game.
