“Motorbikes with sidecars are my passion” remarks Claude, just as well really as I’m very snugly inside one as we bounce across the muddy tracks that crisscross the Hoi An countryside. This is an experience well and truly off your typical tourist treadmill as we trundle along by the side of rice fields and shrimp farms, negotiating the odd water buffalo and a few errant hens. The Reverie Saigon
It’s a rare experience for hotel guests to be upstaged by a hotel’s designers but with The Reverie Saigon it almost seems justified to do so. How can a simple guest possibly compete with eleven of Italy’s most revered interior designers given carte blanche (or should that be carta bianca) to create a landscape of such mind boggling opulence it is almost impossible to comprehend. Yet here it is before my very eyes.

Like all world-class cities, Mexico’s capital is a collection of neighbourhoods each worthy of a few days’ exploration. But with downtown and its ritzy extension Polanco so rich in cultural jewels, few visitors venture beyond, and thus miss out on the joys of Condesa, Roma, Coyoacan and San Angel, all unmissable for different reasons.

Hotel Riu Palace Tenerife
What gin would I like for my G & T? The list is long and after a time I finally opt for Miller’s with lemon zest, orange slices and fennel seeds. It’s refreshing, but by far the best part is drinking it on the terrace of the Hotel Riu Palace overlooking the sea on, a warm November evening.
