Cruise ship passengers will no longer have to wait until they get home to catch up with their favourite television shows as today it was announced that there is to be an exclusive BBC HD channel for cruise ships.
In a briefing at BBCs New broadcasting House in London, plans for the entertainment content were unveiled by Zina Neophytou, Vice president of Out of Home BBC Worldwide.
Content on the new channel will only be for cruise ships and initially exclusively on the P&O UK and Cunard fleets before being rolled out to global shipping later. t will go out live on through Global Eagle Entertainment’s (GEE) MTN TV network.
Popular BBC soaps such as Eastenders, Holby City and Casualty will be shown within 2 days of airing in Britain, but also passengers will be able to view a huge selection of other programmes.
Content will cover all genres, from drama and comedy to award winning natural history and cutting edge documentaries .
Neophytou commented ” There has always been strong demand for BBC content within the travel and hospitality sectors including cruise ships, so launching a bespoke global entertainment channel on MTN TV is an obvious step.”
P&O Cruises Senior Vice president Paul Ludlow said ” We are delighted that our guests will be able to travel the world but still keep up with their favourite television shows for that touch of home. BBC HD will be a superb addition to our in-cabin entertainment and I am sure will be welcomed by our guests on both P&O and Cunard.”
