House of Gods. Glasgow’s most decadent hotel.

House Of Gods

Promoted as the place where decadence meets debauchery, Natasha Blair visits House of Gods to find out what it’s really like.

A fun place to visit with a loved one or someone you want to get to know, the House of Gods is decorated for a seductive dalliance and is definitely a hotel for couples.

From the outside, the building is a nondescript brown stone but stepping through the front door, the lighting is subdued and sultry. A cocktail bar/lounge is on either side of the reception desk. Decorated in dark brown wood on both the walls and floors. I was shown to my Cabin room, a descriptive name for a room similar in size to a small ship’s cabin.  The bed, covered with a dark brown cover, filled one end of the room with a draped swish curtain in leopard print which matched the cushions on my bed. A mirror on the wall at the end of the bed doubles as a television. I wonder if it had ever been turned on?

My package ‘Treat Me like I’m Famous’ which although I was alone, was for two and included a bottle of Prosecco which awaited me in my room with champagne glasses, gold rose petals scattered on my bed, and a box of Hotel Chocolate chocolates.

On a ledge, a button summons the butler for more Prosecco or to order milk and cookies before going to sleep. When I rang for the butler, she turned out to be a young lady who came bearing small bottles of ice-cold milk together with warm, gigantic cookies, emanating a wafting smell of chocolate. A small wardrobe provided a minimal amount of space, presumably not made for more than a night’s stay, with the shower room having a gigantic round shower head, obviously designed for two.

Twenty eight bedrooms over four floors, includes two Presidential Suites. Even though it was morning when I looked at one of the suites, the room was dimly lit, opulent, and also decorated in shades of dark brown. The room contained a draped four poster bed, with a gold, roll top bath in the room, and an enormous mirror come television.

The top floor called ‘The Sacred Garden’ is named after the Garden of Eden. A conservatory decorated with artificial flowers, was light and airy, surrounded on two sides by an outside terrace where there was also seating. As well as the ground floor, this is the place to enjoy cocktails inspired, so their menu says, by Rock n’Roll’s Bohemian past. Individual recipes are attributed to famous people with the Espresso Martini £12.00 inspired by Kate Moss. Fortunately, my package included a £40.00 cocktail tab which could be used in both the Sacred Garden or the Cocktail Lounge on the ground floor.

Breakfast is served here with a limited menu but as a bonus, is served until 11am. From noon, small plates are available which are served into the small hours. Dishes include Scottish mussels cooked in white wine £11.00 and less Scottish, but sounding delicious, oven-baked Camembert with orange marmalade £18.00.

The cocktail bar and Sacred Garden are open to the locals, so booking is essential. One lift with a flight of stairs services the hotel. In keeping with the rest of the hotel, the lighting in the hallways and stairs is kept to a minimum, and where-as I usually take the stairs, it was more prudent to wait for the lift.

House of Gods is well placed for nightlife with a Polo bar at the rear, and the Jacobean Corsetry, a venue for drag shows around the corner. Conveniently located within walking distance of Glasgow’s Central Station off Argyle, Glasgow’s  main shopping street, and near the city’s main square. Pick up a red double decker hop on, hop off bus, an ideal way of familiarising yourself with the ‘must see’ places in the city, and also a great way to see some of the city’s amazing street art.

House of Gods Hotel is a fun place to stay. If staying in a small Cabin room you most probably wouldn’t want to spend more than a night. For longer stays, there are also Classic and Presidential Suites.
