Tuscan wines rarely need an introduction, after all, this is proper chianti country. Rolling hills, forests, ancient olive groves and sun-drenched native Sangiovese vines.
The Gagliole winery is perched on the edge of Tuscany‘s famous “Conca d’Oro” (the golden shell) in Panzano with a glorious view of her classic landscape and if you close your eyes and take a sip of Valetta 2017, you just might feel you’re already there.
This excellent red is a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, packed with flavour, (particularly cherry for me), and super smooth. I really enjoyed the lovely sustained finish without a hint of disappointing acidity.
The vineyards here may be ancient, but the cellars at Gagliole are cutting edge; rotary fermentation tanks using mainly solar-powered energy.
Drinking this wine may give you a real sense of being there, but why not experience the real thing too? Gagliole has a bed and breakfast experience on offer with five apartments within a luxury Tuscan villa right on the estate. I’ve often said, there’s nothing quite like drinking wine amongst the very vines it hailed from. It adds a whole new dimension to the tasting experience.
Then again, if you can’t get there just yet, this wine might just be a worthwhile second prize.
