Coco Reef Bermuda sits on one of the island’s loveliest stretches of beach and is accessed through a breathtaking lobby designed by the flamboyant hotel owner John Jefferis. He has collected baroque mirrors, plinths, huge artworks and chandeliers to create the much talked about entrance. Beyond, the hotel is dotted with golden statues of pirates and mermaids. Other surprising touches include the Library, available for private hire, decorated in dark red with ornate mirrors, candelabra, and even a mock open fire.
Coco Reef has 64 rooms, the higher ones have a sea aspect, and the lower storey rooms have beach views. They are decorated in a Caribbean chintz meets country house style, with wicker furnishing and palm leaf-shaped ceiling fans. The colour scheme throughout is warm corals and peach, highlighted here and there with splashes of gold. All feature king size beds, sofas, flat screen TV, fridge, private balconies or patios and well-equipped bathrooms. Interconnecting rooms are available for families, and free Wi-Fi is available in rooms and throughout the resort
From my terrace, I could see a golden mermaid on the beach below keeping an eye on the seabirds and the sun worshippers.
Coco Reef Bermuda is just a few miles and a 40-minute taxi ride from Bermuda’s L.F.Wade international airport, while the attractions of the capital Hamilton are 10 minutes away and Bermuda’s beaches, watersports and walking trails are all easily accessible.
Guests included couples from the USA and Europe looking for old-fashioned service and style. Families also enjoy the safety of the resort and the beachfront location. I found all the staff pleasant and friendly with a personal touch.
Dining options include Café Coco and the Mediterranean style Tamara’s Terrace with views out to the famous South Shore. The La Vista bar overlooks the ocean and serves light snacks and Bermuda classic cocktails such as Rum Swizzle and Dark n’ Stormy. Exclusive private dining is available in the Library and Bermudaz rooms.
There is a freshwater swimming pool and tennis courts. As well as the oceanfront beach, there is a 220 metre elevated private beach. Cycle hire and snorkelling can be arranged through the front desk. Guests at Coco Reef can enjoy a free round of golf at nearby The Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Course
