Over 3,000 marathon runners from around the world will be arriving on Negril as Jamaica’s Reggae Marathon gets under starter’s orders. One of the world’s most-popular running events takes place on Saturday 6 December 2014, in Jamaica’s party capital Negril.
With $10,000 in prize money up for grabs, runners can take on the 26.2 mile circuit, or a shorter half marathon or even a 10km race. Reggae music and ‘irie’ vibes will naturally be at the centre of things and the competitors will be urged on at each mile marker in true Jamaican style by crowds lining the streets.
A gourmet Pasta Party on 5th December at the nearby Couples Swept Away Sports Complex will precede the racing. Then at 5.15 a.m on Saturday, the air horn will signal the start of the race in the cool of the December morning. In true Jamaican fashion, there will be another party at the end of the racing.
All of the races start and finish at Long Bay Beach Park situated along Negril’s famed Seven Mile Beach. The IAAF certified marathon and half marathon course is mainly flat, looping into the town of Negril then heading north towards the town of Green Island, before looping back to the start point for runners to cross the finish line.
