In a country that’s filled with great diners, having breakfast in your hotel in the USA always seems to be a wasted opportunity for a good meal. We’ve all been there. ‘Room number? Help yourself to the buffet.’ On the buffet the scrambled eggs come in lukewarm lumps and you’re dying for a coffee but five minutes later you’re still trying to find a waiter to bring you one.

Remember The Alamo? I’d wanted to visit San Antonio ever since watching the John Wayne movie as a kid. It may have been historically inaccurate – so much so that two of the historical advisers asked for their names to be removed from the credits – but there was lots of shooting and whooping and John Wayne being the brave hero, so what’s not to like when you’re ten years old?

From the grandeur of the State Capitol that opened in 1808 to the fashionable funkiness of the quirky shops on South Congress, where my wife treated herself to a pair of Texas cowgirl boots.
